Week 14 Day 4
Saul's love for David turned angry
and Jonathan (Saul's son and David's friend)
was caught in the middle
of conflicting loyalties
God had enabled David
to conquer Goliath
but why was it
that nothing could conquer
the evil spirit
that possessed Saul?
Saul had some great victories
on the battlefield
nevertheless he could not win
the war within himself.
DAVID ON THE RUN
Saul was consumed by bitterness, rage and jealousy.
I Samuel 18, 19, 20 & 23
2Saul took David that day, and would not let him go home
anymore. 5David went wherever Saul sent him and behaved
wisely. 6Now it happened as they were coming home, that
women had come out of the cities, singing and dancing, to
meet King Saul, with tambourines. 7The women danced,
and sang: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten
thousands." Saul was very angry, and said, "What more
can he have but the kingdom?" 9So Saul eyed David from
that day forward.
1Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to his servants, that
they should kill David. 2So Jonathan told David, "My father
Saul seeks to kill you. Please be on your guard until morning,
and stay in a secret place and hide. 3 I will go out and stand
beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak
with my father about you. What I observe, I will tell you."
30Then Saul's anger was aroused against Jonathan, and
he said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman!"
Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your
shame? As long as the son of Jesse lives, you shall not be
established, nor your kingdom. Send and bring him to me,
for he shall surely die." 32Jonathan answered Saul his father,
"Why should he be killed? What has he done?" 33Then
Saul cast a spear at him.
34So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate
no food. He was grieved for David, because his father had
treated him shamefully.
1David escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his father's
house heard it, they went down there to him. 2Everyone who
was in distress, in debt, and was discontented gathered to him.
So David became captain over about four hundred men.
9Doeg the Edomite, said, "I saw the son of Jesse going to
Ahimelech, 10who gave him provisions." 11So the king sent
to Ahimelech the priest, and13said to him, "Why have you
conspired against me?"
14Ahimelech answered, "Who among your servants is as
faithful as David." 17Then the king said to the guards, "Turn
and kill the priests of the Lord; their hand is with David. But
they would not strike the priests. 18So Doeg the Edomite
killed eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod. 20One son
of Ahimelech, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.
