Week 13   Day 4

            many things demand our attention

                        people calling

                        messages coming

                        employers telling

                        children inquiring

                        equipment repairing

                        schools delaying

                        emotions flying

                        fatigue coming

                        eyes closing

            perhaps like the boy Samuel

            lying down to sleep

is when we are most vulnerable

                        to the Lord's voice

when the words of the day fall silent

when the room is nearly darkened

                        when only the shadows remain

when we wrap ourselves in familiar covers

                        when the rhythmic breathing

                                    signals sleep is near

                        when the feeling of falling

                                    alerts us again

in the quiet the Lord speaks with us

                                    reviewing the day

                                    anticipating tomorrow

                        planning with us

                                    to speak kindly

                                    to love joyfully

                                    to correct gently

                                    to give graciously

                                    to work peacefully

                                    to listen patiently

                                    to serve faithfully

                                    A SLEEPLESS NIGHT
Out of the darkness came the voice of God with a message.

                                          I Samuel 2 & 3

22Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to

all Israel.  23So he said to them, "Why do you do such things?

I hear of your evil dealings.  24No, my sons!  It is not a good

report I hear.  You make the Lord's people transgress.''

25Nevertheless they did not heed their father.

1Now the boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli.

The word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no
2 It came to pass 4that the Lord called Samuel.
5So he ran
to Eli and said, "Here I am,
for you called me."  Eli said, "I did
not call; lie down again."
6The Lord called again, "Samuel!"
Samuel went to Eli,
and said, "Here I am, for you called me."
Eli answered, "I did
not call, my son; lie down again."
8The Lord called Samuel
again the third time.  So he arose
and went to Eli, saying, "Here I am,
for you did call me."  Then
Eli perceived that the Lord had
called the boy.  9So Eli said,
"Go, lie down; and if He calls
you, say, 'Speak, Lord, for Your
servant hears.'"  So Samuel
went and lay down in his place.

10Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other
"Samuel!  Samuel!"  And Samuel answered, "Speak
for Your
servant hears."  The Lord said to Samuel:  "Behold,
I will do
something in Israel at which both ears of everyone who
hears it
will tingle.  12 I will perform against Eli all that I have
concerning his house.  13 I will judge his house forever
for the
iniquity which he knows, because his sons made
vile, and he did not restrain them."

15So Samuel lay down until morning, and opened the doors

of the house of the Lord.  Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the vision.

16Then Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son!"  He

answered, "Here I am."  17And he said, "What is the word that

the Lord spoke to you?  Please do not hide it from me.  God
so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of
the things that He said to you."  18Then Samuel told him

everything.  And Eli said, "It is the Lord.  Let Him do what
seems good to Him."

19So Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let
of his words fall to the ground.  20All Israel from Dan
Beersheba knew that Samuel had been established as
a prophet
of the Lord.  21Then the Lord appeared again in
Shiloh.  For
the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel.
