Week 39 Day 1
what does it mean to say that the Word became flesh
that God was incarnate
that God became like us
that God is in the midst of us
our bodies often get in the way of what we want
not able to endure the demands we make
not able to go without rest and sleep
not able to stay young or strong
they are susceptible to wear and tear
weaken with the years
are subject to and respond to
all kinds of
whims
wills
wickedness
all kinds of
good
grace
gentleness
God coming to us in the flesh
subjected himself to all of that too
in order to
identify with our nature
understand our experience
and love us anyway
"and the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us
full of grace and truth"
---rus
WHERE DOES JESUS' STORY BEGIN?
Not in Bethlehem, but before the world began!
John 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All
things were made through Him; without Him nothing was made
that was made. 4 In Him was life, the light of men. 5The light
shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7He came to bear witness, that all through him might believe.
He was not that Light, but was a witness of that Light, 9which
gives light to every man coming into the world.
10He was in the world, and the world was made through
Him, and the world did not know Him. 11He came to His
own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as
received Him, to them He gave the right to become children
of God: 13who were born, not of blood, nor the will of the flesh,
nor the will of man, but of God.
14The Word became flesh and dwelt among us; we beheld
His glory, as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace
and truth. 17For the law was given through Moses, but grace
and truth came through Jesus. 18No one has seen God at any
time. The only begotten Son has declared Him.
19This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests
and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 23He
said: "I am 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Make
straight the way of the Lord,"' as the prophet Isaiah said."
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,
"Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
32John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven
like a dove. 33This is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit."
35Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples
and 37the two followed Jesus. 38Jesus turned, and seeing them,
said, "What do you seek?" They said, "Rabbi, where are you
staying?" 39He said to them, "Come and see." They came and
remained with Him that day. 40One of the two was Andrew,
Simon Peter's brother. 41He found his brother Simon, and said,
"We have found the Messiah." 42And he brought him to Jesus.
43The following day Jesus found Philip and said to him,
"Follow Me." 45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We
have found Him of whom Moses and the prophets wrote--Jesus
of Nazareth. 46Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good
come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."
