Week 34 Day 2
Jonah started praying
when there was nothing else
he could do
With great intensity and emotion he
described his situation to God
assessed his woeful situation
decided not to give up
determined to remember the Lord
and his mercies
pleaded for God's aid
and capped it off with some promises
The second time God asked Jonah
to go to Nineveh
Jonah was ready to go
What a story he had to tell!
He arrived in the great Assyrian city
with the grace of God
fresh on his mind
The people of Nineveh believed Jonah
believed God
and changed their way of living
And what God had planned to do
did not happen
Divine intentions can be changed
by our change
of behavior
Nothing is set in stone
no fate is sealed
We are doomed only if we choose to be.
FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD
The storm didn't make Jonah pray, but the belly of the fish did.
Jonah 2 & 3
1Then Jonah prayed from the fish's belly. 2He said:
"I cried out to the Lord, and He answered me.
Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and You heard my voice.
3You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,
Floods surrounded me; billows and waves passed over me.
4Then I said, 'I have been cast out of Your sight;
Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.'
5The waters surrounded me, even to my soul;
The deep closed around me; weeds wrapped my head.
6 I went down to the moorings of the mountains;
The earth with its bars closed behind me forever;
Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O my God.
7When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord;
My prayer went up to You, into Your holy temple.
8Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own Mercy.
9But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord."
10So God spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
1The word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,
2"Go to Nineveh and preach to it the message that I tell you."
3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was an
exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent.
4Jonah entered the city on the first day's walk. He cried out
and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!"
8So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast,
and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
6The word came to the king of Nineveh; he arose from his
throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth
and sat in ashes. 7He proclaimed and published by the
decree of the king and his nobles, saying,
Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, eat
or drink water. 8But be covered with sackcloth,
and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn
from his evil way and from the violence that is
in his hands. 9Who can tell if God will turn
and relent, so that we may not perish?
10Then God saw their works, that they turned from their
evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said
He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
