Week 33 Day 7
Amos preached judgment
When things get unbearable
that is when people
will acknowledge God
return to God
So the purpose of judgment
is to turn things around
When we change
our circumstances will change.
Obadiah's message was for Edom
the descendants of Esau
the twin brother of Jacob
Edom was silent
and did nothing to help
when Israel and Judah
were being overrun
They took advantage of
and even aided Israel's enemy.
ON THAT DAY
To listen and then do nothing, is to invite God's judgment.
Amos 8 & 9 and Obediah 1
4Hear this, you who swallow up the needy, 5saying:
"When will the New Moon be past, that we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath, that we may trade wheat?
Making the ephah small and the shekel large,
Falsifying the scales by deceit, 6even selling the bad wheat?"
7The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob:
"Surely I will never forget any of their works.
Shall the land not tremble, and everyone mourn?
9"It shall come to pass in that day,
That I will make the sun go down at noon,
And I will darken the earth in broad daylight;
10 I will turn your feasts and your songs into mourning;
I will bring sackcloth, and baldness on every head;
Like mourning for an only son, and its end like a bitter day.
11"The days are coming, that I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
But of hearing the words of the Lord.
12They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east;
They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,
But shall not find it.
1The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord concerning Edom:
10"For violence against your brother Jacob, Shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.
11 In the day that you stood on the other side--
In the day that strangers carried captive his forces,
When foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem--
Even you were as one of them.
12"Gaze not on your brother in the day of his captivity;
Nor rejoice over the children of Judah
In the day of their destruction;
Nor should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
13You should not have entered the gate of My people,
Nor laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity.
14You should not have stood at the crossroads
To cut off those among them who escaped;
Nor should you have delivered those who remained.
15"For the day of the Lord upon all the nations is near;
As you have done, it shall be done to you;
Your reprisal shall return upon your own head." This Bible passage was condensed from the NKJV
